UNIDO and Cambodia Collaborate to Launch Eco-Industrial Park Project

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is joining forces with Cambodia's Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) to develop an eco-industrial park (EIP) in the country. Aimed at promoting sustainable industrial development, the initiative will integrate environmental protection with resource efficiency and economic prosperity.

During a meeting held on March 26, Minister Hem Vanndy of MISTI and a delegation from UNIDO, led by Country Director Sok Narin, discussed the project. UNIDO has secured approval from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation for a scoping mission to kickstart the development of this green industrial park in Cambodia.

The initiative will see consultants evaluating 6 to 10 Special Economic Zones (SEZs), guided by UNIDO's 64 standards, to identify a suitable location for the Green Industrial Park project. This year-long pilot project aims to set a benchmark for the development of green industrial parks throughout the nation.

Sok Narin highlighted that the Green Industrial Park project will adhere to the principles of the circular economy, optimizing resource use. UNIDO plans to leverage its experience from green industrial park projects in seven countries, including Vietnam and Indonesia, to contribute to the project's success.

Minister Hem Vanndy expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing the importance of selecting a strategic location for the special economic zone based on Cambodia's competitive advantages to ensure the project's success.
